Second grade does an elaborate study on money. They spend all year making a certain amount of money each week. With that weekly amount they pay rent for their desk and such. If they have problems with others they may have to pay money to solve the problem, etc. Then after Christmas they were to start thinking of a product to sell. They had to create the product or products at home preferably with supplies already at home. They created a store name, made a commercial at school to advertise their product(s) which were all watched the morning before the big sell. The week of the sell they created a "store front." On the big day they all set up their desks as their stores and parents, teachers, etc were invited to shop. We were given money when we got there to shop all 4 classrooms. Then all the second graders were also allowed to shop with the money they had earned all year. It was a fun afternoon and we were very impressed with the creativity of the kids (or parents). Items ranged from baked goods to homemade coasters to stress balls to jewelry. Jaxson choose to make and sell three different items: a bird book (journal), crazy crayons (multi-colored crayons in different shapes) and backpack tags (out of decorative duck tape) He had a great time and sold all his items.
